It's easy to see why people from all over come to Western Sumatra to marvel at these feats of architecture.
Ingredients & Instructions
While I can't take you to the actual Rumah Gadang, I can use this opportunity to share my favorite Indonesian recipe that is inspired by one of these beloved homes.
Ingredients:
- 1 pound flank steak, thinly sliced
- 1-2 red chili peppers, sliced
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 3 garlic cloves, sliced
- 1 red onion, sliced
- 1 large tomato, diced
- 1 tablespoon sweet soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 cup water
Instructions:
- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add garlic, onion and chili peppers. Cook for 3-4 minutes or until softened.
- Add steak and cook for 5-7 minutes or until browned on the outside and cooked through.
- Stir in tomato, sweet soy sauce, oyster sauce and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 10-15 minutes or until sauce has thickened.
- Serve hot with steamed rice and enjoy!
