Hey peeps! So today I stumbled upon some really funky houses called Honai and boy, did I have a good laugh! But wait there's more, turns out there are 7 other types of traditional houses from Papua that you probably never knew existed! Let's take a look:
Rumah Adat Papua - Honai
First up we have the Honai, which looks like it came straight out of Teletubbies! 
But don't let its cute exterior fool you, it actually has a lot of cultural significance for the Papuan people. The Honai is usually made out of wood and straw and is designed to represent the concept of family and community. It's pretty cool if you ask me, but I still can't get over how much it looks like a giant mushroom!
Balai Honai
Next up we have the Balai Honai, which is basically an upgraded version of the Honai. It's bigger, has more complex designs and is usually reserved for important events like weddings and funerals.
Bagas Wambon
The Bagas Wambon looks like something out of a fantasy movie with its pointed roofs and intricate carvings. It's usually used by tribes in the Jayawijaya Mountains and is believed to be the dwelling place of their ancestors.
Ebei
The Ebei is a pretty interesting one. It's basically a longhouse made out of bamboo and straw that can house multiple families. So next time you're complaining about sharing a room with your siblings, just be glad you don't have to share a house with multiple families!
Holo
The Holo is probably the one that looks the most practical out of all of them. It's a rectangular shaped house made out of wood and straw. It's usually built on stilts to protect it from floods and is big enough to house a family of 4.
Jogu
The Jogu is pretty similar to the Honai, but with a twist! It's shaped like a dome, but with a more pointed roof. It's usually used as a ceremonial house and can house up to 8 people.
Yamih
The Yamih looks like a really long canoe that's been turned into a house. It's usually used by tribes that live near the coast and has a lot of practical uses like being able to easily move it around and use it as a fishing boat.
So there you have it folks, 7 types of traditional houses from Papua that you had no idea existed! Who knew houses could be so fascinating?
Recipe
Now that we've had our dose of cultural education for the day, let's get to the fun part - cooking! Today we're going to be making a Papuan inspired dish called Saksang. Here's what you'll need:
Ingredients:
- 1 kg of pork shoulder or butt
- 3 cloves of garlic, chopped
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 6 kaffir lime leaves
- 3 stalks of lemongrass, cut into 5 cm lengths
- 1 tsp of salt
- 1 tsp of ground coriander
- 1 tsp of turmeric powder
- 2 tbsp of cooking oil
Instructions:
- Cut the pork into small cubes and marinate it with the salt, coriander and turmeric powder for 30 minutes.
- Heat up the oil in a wok and fry the pork until it's brown on all sides.
- Add in the garlic and onion and fry for another minute until fragrant.
- Throw in the lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves and stir fry for another minute.
- Add 1 cup of water, cover the wok and let it simmer for 45 minutes or until the pork is tender.
- Remove the lid and let the liquid reduce until it thickens.
- Voila! Your Saksang is ready to be served with a side of rice.
